There are multiple reasons as to why you would need to shut off the main water valve. Such instances would include:

Uh… Where Even Is My Main Water Valve?
Depending on where the problem is, the first step is to try to cut off the water near the source. Some typical areas could be under the sink, behind the clothes washer and against the wall under the toilet.
Next, you’ll have to find the main water valve. Unfortunately, each house is different so there isn’t just one location. Some of those locations could be:
In the basement:The shut-off valve is typically found near the front foundation wall.
In the crawlspace with a basement:In this case, the valve is where water enters the basement. If your home is older, it may be in the crawlspace.
In the crawlspace with no basement:Anywhere in your house is a possibility, but it would most likely be near the water heater or under the kitchen sink.
