Five Water Saving Plumbing Fixtures You Need

nsplash Let’s set the record straight right now – today’s water-saving fixtures are nothing like the water-saving showerhead you tried in 2008 only to get rid of it two weeks later because you couldn’t stand the low water pressure.

Modern efficient plumbing features are equipped with enhanced technology so you don’t have to sacrifice pressure when saving water.

Now that we’re past preconceptions, let’s talk about why and how you should save water.

Why Save Water

There are two main reasons why you should care about water conservation:

  • Save money
  • Reduce environmental impact

It’s simple, the less water you use, the lower your monthly water bill will be. That means more money to spend on a summer vacation or more water-saving fixtures.

Water shortages are a real problem in places like California, Atlanta and Texas. Every little bit of water you save makes a difference. Doing your part ensures we will have plenty of clean water to drink for years to come.

How to Save Water

There are many ways to save water, but before you have your family adopt the “If it’s yellow let it mellow…” mantra, start with some of these water-efficient plumbing fixtures.

Water-Saving Showerhead

Remember – installing a water-efficient showerhead doesn’t mean sacrificing water pressure. Typical showerheads use about 2.5 gallons of water per minute, but water-saving models only use about 2 gallons per minute.

This doesn’t seem like a lot at first, but consider that you save 5 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower. Multiply that by 365 days and you end up saving 1,825 gallons every year.

High-Efficiency Toilets

Depending on how old your toilet is, it could be using up to 6 gallons of water per flush. Compare that to the 1.3 gallons per flush used in modern high-efficiency toilets, and it’s easy to see how a new toilet will pay for itself in no time.

Newer toilets are designed not to clog even though they use less water. But make sure you’re read up on toilet plungers if you’re worried.

Water-Saving Washing Machines

Your washing machine could use up to 23 gallons of water per load while a water-efficient model only uses about 13 gallons per load. Sure, the wash cycle takes a little longer. But the end results are the same. The extra 10-20 minutes per load is worth the water and money you’ll save annually.

Water-Saving Dishwashers

You probably already know that using a dishwasher instead of handwashing is a great way to save water. But you could save up to 4 gallons per load when you switch to a water-efficient dishwasher. Modern models are designed to get the most out of every drop—saving water and cleaning your dishes.

Aerator-Equipped Faucets

Save water without reducing rinsing capability with an aerator-equipped faucet. They inject air into the stream—displacing water without affecting flow or pressure. These faucets can save up to a gallon a minute which can quickly add up over time.

Basically, any plumbing fixture can be replaced with a more water-efficient model. You’ll hardly notice the difference in your home, but you will notice the drop in your water bill.
