Water pressure problems? We feel bad for you, son

There’s nothing worse than a morning shower with low water pressure, I think we can all agree to that. You rinse and rinse and rinse, but the shampoo seems to never come out.

So low pressure=bad and high pressure=good, right? Believe it or not, high pressure can have serious negative effects on your home’s plumbing system.

High Water Pressure Problems

Think of water pressure like blood pressure. The higher your blood pressure is, the more stress it causes on other parts of your body. The same is true for high water pressure.

If your water pressure is too high, your home is more prone to pipe leaks, faucet leaks and shortened appliance life.

How do I know if my water pressure is too high?

The quickest way to test your water pressure is to attach a pressure gauge to your outside hose spigot. Simply run the water and check the PSI reading. Most homes hover somewhere between 40 and 60 PSI. If your water pressure is at or near 80 PSI, you have excessively high water pressure.

How do I fix high water pressure?

Fixing high water pressure is easier than you think. Simply install a pressure regulator on your main waterline and set it to your liking (as long as it’s between 40 and 60 PSI). Most homes built after 2002 already have a pressure regulator, so it might just be a matter of adjusting the pressure downward for these homeowners.

Low Water Pressure Problems

We don’t have to tell you that low water pressure is the worst, but we will anyway. Low water pressure is the worst. It makes simple day-to-day activities miserable.

  • Showering
  • Doing dishes
  • Washing your hands
  • Brushing your teeth
  • Doing laundry
  • Watering plants

You get the point. So, what can you do if you have low water pressure?

How do I fix low water pressure?

If you notice consistent low pressure from all your water sources, check your pressure regulator. If it’s set below 40 PSI, adjust up to 50 or 60 PSI to quickly increase your pressure.

Other causes of low pressure include water leaks, mineral build-up from hard water, faucet clogs and low pressure from the water source. Fixing each of these can take a bit more time as you first have to determine the cause before you fix it.
